About
The World Medical Tennis Society (WMTS) has a rich history, with its origins dating back to 1971. Founded in the United States, it was established to bring together medical professionals who share a passion for both medicine and tennis. Over the years the WMTS has grown to include more than forty member societies from various parts of the world.
A key highlight of the WMTS calendar is its annual Congress and World Championships, a flagship event that gathers medical doctors (MDs) and dentists from around the globe. This unique gathering serves as a platform for scientific exchange, professional networking, and friendly tennis competitions. Participants engage in a blend of intellectual discourse through scientific presentations and discussions, as well as spirited tennis matches that showcase the athletic prowess of medical professionals.
Believing in the beneficial effects of sport on social relations as well as maintaining health, physical and mental well-being of medical professionals, Semmelweis University is committed to offering its affiliates a wide array of sporting opportunities in both recreational and competitive sports through its Sports Club, which operates a separate tennis division.
As Central Europe's leading university of medicine and health sciences and the event’s main organizer, Semmelweis University Budapest undertook the professional and financial support of the Budapest event as of 1st February 2024, and at the same time the university involved its own for-profit company - Semmelweis Medical Services Ltd., - in the organizational tasks, which also operates as an independent medical services provider under the brand name Semmelweis Premium.
Further organizers of the 53rd World Medical Tennis Society Congress and Championship are the World Medical Tennis Society, the Hungarian Medical Tennis Society, the Semmelweis University Sports Club and the Hungarian Tennis Association.
